Prerequisite: none | |
Enjoy boating activities year round by taking the Boating Course this fall and winter! And even if
you've got your basic competence licence (PCOC), come increase your knowledge by attending the
Halifax Power and Sail Squadron Boating Course in the fall of 2011. This course is for both new and
experienced boaters, covering many aspects of the theory of boat handling and sail planning, and
offering significantly more information than is found in the short BoatPro/Boating Basics course.
It is the essential basis for anyone planning to handle a vessel on our Atlantic waters. Whether
you are interested in powerboats, sailing vessels or kayaks, this course is for you! Course topics cover boat handling for both power and sail boats - under normal and adverse conditions: docking and anchoring; aids to navigation (buoy identification) and rules of the road; government regulations and required safety equipment; rope lines and knots; weather; handling emergencies; tides and currents. As well, you will be introduced to the challenge of plotting and navigation. The course concludes with a 2-part final exam: Part 1 is the Accredited Boating (PCOC) exam, which is governed by Transport Canada and also approved by National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (USA) and recognized by the United States Coast Guard; Part 2 is on the additional material covered in the course. With successful completion of both parts students also earn a full CPS membership, with all the benefits it bestows. As a bonus, then, successful completion of the course can lead to cheaper insurance!! Top | |
